Equipment

  • Medium Bowl
  • plastic wrap
  • Sharp knife

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 200 g cream cheese Adds creaminess and rich texture; substitute with low-fat cream cheese for a lighter option.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Provides brightness and balances flavors; vinegar can work in a pinch if needed.
  • 1 teaspoon fresh dill, finely chopped Brings a fresh herbal note; dill weed or chives can be substituted.
  • ½ teaspoon lemon zest Enhances the lemon flavor and aroma; orange zest offers a unique twist.
  • 1 pinch salt Essential for flavor enhancement; adjust according to taste.
  • 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper Adds a subtle hint of spice; can be omitted for a milder taste.

For the Roll-Ups

  • 4 large tortillas The base for assembling; gluten-free tortillas work for a gluten-free option.
  • 200 g thinly sliced smoked salmon The star ingredient, delivering a rich, smoky flavor; smoked trout can be used as an alternative.
  • ¼ cup capers, chopped Adds a briny kick; omit if not preferred.
  • ¼ cup finely chopped red onion Brings crunch and bite; substitute with white or yellow onion for a milder flavor.
  • 1 cup fresh arugula or spinach leaves Introduces texture and freshness; any seasonal greens work well.

Instructions

Making the Roll-Ups

  • In a medium bowl, blend the softened cream cheese with fresh lemon juice, finely chopped dill, lemon zest, salt, and pepper until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  • Evenly spread a layer of the cream cheese mixture across one tortilla, leaving a small edge around the sides for rolling.
  • Place a generous layer of thinly sliced smoked salmon over the cream cheese, ensuring it covers most of the surface for maximum flavor.
  • If desired, sprinkle chopped capers and red onion on top, then add fresh arugula or spinach leaves for an extra burst of flavor and texture.
  • Starting from the bottom edge, roll the tortilla tightly to prevent air pockets and ensure a firm roll, tucking in the filling as you go.
  • Moisten the top edge of the tortilla with a little water to help seal the roll. Repeat with remaining tortillas and filling.
  • Wrap each roll in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to help them firm up and make slicing easier.
  • After chilling, slice each roll into 2-3 cm thick pieces. Arrange on a serving platter.
  • Optionally, garnish with additional dill or a sprinkle of lemon zest and serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to enjoy.

Notes

For best results, chill the assembled roll-ups for about 30 minutes before slicing to enhance presentation.
