Ingredients

Chai Tea Preparation

  • 1.5 cups unsweetened almond milk (or your favorite plant-based milk)
  • 3 bags black tea bags
  • 0.25 cups pure maple syrup
  • 1-2 tablespoons chai spice blend

For the Dough

  • 3 cups organic all-purpose flour Check the notes!
  • 2 cups organic artisan bread flour
  • 0.5 cups organic cane sugar plus 1 tablespoon
  • 1 packet rapid rise yeast (~2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1.25 cups warm chai tea mixture save the remaining ¼ cup for the glaze
  • 0.25 cups warm water
  • 6 tablespoons vegan butter, melted cooled until warm
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon sea salt

For the Filling

  • 0.5 cups organic brown sugar
  • 0.25 cups vegan butter, softened at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

For the Glaze

  • 3 cups organic powdered sugar, sifted
  • 4 tablespoons vegan butter, softened at room temperature
  • 3-4 tablespoons cooled chai tea mixture

Instructions

To Make the Chai Tea

  • In a small pot, heat the almond milk until warm but not boiling.
  • Steep the black tea bags in the warm almond milk for about 5-7 minutes.
  • Remove the tea bags and stir in the maple syrup and chai spice blend. Set this mixture aside to cool slightly.

For the Dough

  • In a big bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, bread flour, cane sugar, and yeast.
  • Add the chai tea mixture, warm water, melted vegan butter, vanilla extract, and sea salt. Stir until the dough starts to come together.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

For the Filling

  • In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, softened vegan butter, and ground cinnamon until combined.

Assembly + Bake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface into a rectangle.
  • Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough.
  • Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other, forming a log.
  • Cut the log into equal pieces, about 1 inch wide.
  • Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown on top and baked through.

For the Glaze

  • In a bowl, mix the powdered sugar, softened vegan butter, and cooled chai tea mixture until smooth.
  • Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls once they are out of the oven.

Notes

These cinnamon rolls are best served warm. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or refrigerate for up to a week. They can also be frozen for long-term storage.
